Laxman visits Ae’gura

I came into the Cavern today to discover that Victor Laxman was in the City and about to speak to the explorers. I headed to the Nexus, only to find that it was already at the 100 person limit. Fortunately, there were some relayers in the GoG2 ‘hood, so I was still able to hear everything that was being said. Laxman’s speech was fairly short, and he didn’t answer many questions, but it was still good to hear from the DRC. I shall write here a summary of what he had to say.

Laxman spoke on two subjects today; the Great Zero, and the Bahro:

Great Zero

Laxman stated that, while the deaths have affected everyone, we are continuing to move forward. Last week, there was a spike in the GZ calibrations, and it is now ready to be activated. The DRC invites everyone to gather in your ‘hood GZs tomorrow, the 24th, at 4:00pm Cavern Time (16:00 KI time) to witness this exciting event. Everyone is encouraged to continue with the calibration missions, in order to make sure that the activation goes as planned.

In addition to the GZs activation, the progress from our calibration efforts have resulted in a new KI feature — custom marker missions. Laxman did not go into much detail on this, but did state that he believed “The Great Zero was used for KI coordinates and for surveying“.

Bahro

According to Laxman, the DRC have noticed a change in the Bahro’s activity level; while their activity has decreased within the cavern, it has increased in other Ages. However, these Ages are mainly ones that we explorers do not have access to, and the DRC are staying away from those Ages. Despite this, Laxman claims the DRC are doing their best to not restrict any areas, and are not delaying any Age releases due to Bahro activity.

After these statements, Laxman suddenly vanished without a sound.

It seems Laxman crashed out at this point, which I find slightly amusing. :) As he did not return, I assume that was all he had to say and did not find it worth coming back just to say goodbye.

No more DRC members have been seen in the Cavern at this time, but I’m willing to bet we will see more of them soon enough. In the meantime, I’m off to a Karate black belt ceremony on the surface…

  1. Excellent. :) In case Izy was still wondering, it was the marker missions that I was referring to. Hehe.. when was this “spike” in calibration?

    Ah well, they’re starting the GZ without me. Did he indicate _how much_ of an activation it would be?

    And… did you say.. 100 person limit? :shock: Sounds like there have been some improvments. :D Have you gotten down in there? How was the great lag city?

    And Hero, Congratulations on your “first post”. ;) I’d say it’s a good one. :)

    The calibration spike was “last week”, whatever that means. He didn’t say how much of an activation… I think most people are assuming that it’ll just be turned on. Though key words/phrases seem to be “initial calibration” and “next phase”, so who knows…

    And yes, 100 person limit. :D I have gotten down there; it’s much easier with the higher cap. Now that the cones are gone, linking in takes almost no time at all. There seems to be no problem at all with server-side lag; however, I still get about 5fps with that many avvies — client-side lag is still there. :\

  3. By the way, a few quick updates…

    A KI message from the DRC came out a few hours ago announcing a new area that could be accessed via the Nexus. (I’ll let you all wonder what it is for a while ;)) A couple hours later, Cate Alexander showed up there, said a few words and held a Q&A session. I would make another post, but unfortunately, I missed part of it and I didn’t get good chat logs. However, here are some of the main points about future things that I found interesting:

    – The DRC is working on Ahnonay (many people were expecting this already, since the announcement about Er’cana)
    – When asked about the DRC’s long-term plans, Cate said they had been discussing that recently. “Quite a bit of money has been invested in this project. There are tough questions to answer ahead. I can’t go into details. But these are critical times.” When asked if it had to do with funding issues, Cate answered in the affirmative.
    – And to end on a positive note, the DRC is working on a never-before-seen Age, Jalak, which is apparently a D’ni gaming arena. This Age is estimated to be ready in a month or so. (Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing the D’ni Xbox ;))

  4. I would point out that pretty much _all_ of the lag to date has been client side. It was basically a problem with avatar loading. (it would inexplicably take up to 5 seconds to load an avatar, and the game would freeze during the loading process) If you are getting a _constant_ 5fps, (no freezing for more than a seconds) then one or both of those problems has been fixed, and what you see now is simply low framerate, the result of throwing 5,000,000 polygons at your graphics card per frame. ;)

    Anyway, I’m back, had a good festival, and I’ve watched the GZ activation videos. Seems it’s all the way up, so I’ve missed it entirely. Can’t wait to head down to the newly blue-ified pub. (are they insane? it’s capped at 5000 :shock: though I hear the lag isn’t bad in there…)

  5. Yeah, all the “lag” complaints seem to be just low framerate now.

    They did have the servers crash right after they activated the GZ… not sure what that was about.

    And while the Pub population cap may be 5000, it hasn’t gotten over 130-140 to my knowledge.

  6. Ah, well. Still, I used to have seriously intolerable lag in a hood with 70, so 140 sounds like an acheivement.

    And of course, I see that we’ve now had the obligatory “servers go down the moment new conted is released because everybody-and-their-mother logs in at once”, followed by the ensuing complaint threads, which appear to be somewhat more tempered this time. (though that may simply be the result of the customary over-moderation)

    It’s my understanding that these outages are the result of the Authentication server going down. (as the symptoms are “all links fail”) If I recall, they have 20 or so gameservers, (the ones that you have to be constantly connected to) and only one auth server, (only contacted when you link) and that server has to be associated with gametap, since they are responsible for paying account information. So, it’s the first to go when they have a surge, and it’s also the one not under their direct control. :D I predict that this will happen at least once every episode. :P

    Anyway, I am now “patchingggg”, and I should be down in a bit to check out the newitude.

    Wow, my typing fingers are out of practice after a weekend with no computers. :D

  9. yah, it was an internal network thing. All sorted out now. :) Had a great game of sardines with y’all. (longest round in kemo ever :shock:)

    Maz, I saw you on chat, good to see yer still around. I’ll have to run that marker mission tomorrow.

    So.. now that I have no lag to complain about, does it seem like the journey ages are unusually buggy now? :P

    So anyway, I’m now officially back from my real life, and I can get on with my surreal one. :D
